    Referral is the process of directing a patient to a higher level of care or to another health care provider for more specialized services. Optimum care of sick neonates often involves referral which is still a challenge in sub-Saharan Africa.

    Blood transfusion according to WHO, is the process of transferring blood or blood products from a donor into the recipient's circulatory system. Severe anemia in children is a major cause of hospital admissions and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Blood transfusion is a life-saving treatment for severely anemic children in both developed and developing countries.
